Ahmedabad: Connectivity between the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway and the Sardar Patel Ring Road (SPRR) is set for an upgrade, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inviting bids for the construction of a new interchange at the expressway’s starting point in Ahmedabad.

The proposed interchange is expected to improve traffic movement at the junction where the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway meets the Sardar Patel Ring Road. The location currently has a circular junction, which could face increasing congestion as traffic on the expressway grows.

NHAI Invites Bids for ₹124.40 Crore Interchange

According to the NHAI tender, the proposed interchange has an estimated construction cost of ₹124.40 crore, excluding GST.

The project will be developed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, with a targeted completion period of 18 months. NHAI has also specified a 10-year maintenance period for the project.

The bids for the project are scheduled to be opened on October 23, 2026.

What Will the New Interchange Include?

The proposed interchange is planned with dedicated ramps and service roads to make vehicle movement between the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway and SPRR more efficient.

As per the proposed layout:

  • Ramp-1 will facilitate movement from Bakrol towards Dholera.
  • Ramp-2 will provide connectivity from Dholera towards Sanathal.
  • Service roads will be developed on both sides to support local and connecting traffic.

The planned configuration is intended to reduce conflict between different traffic movements and provide a more streamlined connection between the expressway and Ahmedabad’s existing ring-road network.

Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway Strengthens Regional Connectivity

The 109.019-km Ahmedabad-Dholera Greenfield Expressway (NE-8) has emerged as an important road link connecting Ahmedabad with Dholera and other parts of the region.

Developed at an investment of approximately ₹5,800 crore, the expressway has significantly reduced road travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera, bringing the journey to around 45 minutes.

The improved road connection is particularly significant for the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), as well as connectivity to the upcoming Dholera International Airport.

Better road infrastructure is also expected to support industrial development, business activity and investment opportunities around the Dholera region.

Expressway Project Also Focuses on Sustainable Construction

Beyond connectivity, the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway has also attracted attention for its use of recycled and alternative construction materials.

The project reportedly incorporated around 60 lakh metric tonnes of municipal waste and approximately 22 lakh metric tonnes of fly ash during construction.

Large-scale plantation and other environment-oriented measures were also incorporated into the project.

The approach highlights how modern highway infrastructure can be designed not only to improve mobility but also to address aspects of resource reuse and environmental sustainability.

Why the SPRR Interchange Matters

As traffic volumes increase on the Ahmedabad-Dholera corridor, the connection between the expressway and the Sardar Patel Ring Road will become increasingly important.

A dedicated interchange can help separate traffic movements, improve access to different directions and reduce the pressure that could otherwise build up at a conventional circular junction.

For commuters, businesses and industries using the Ahmedabad-Dholera corridor, the proposed infrastructure could provide a more efficient connection between the expressway and Ahmedabad’s wider road network.

A Key Infrastructure Upgrade for the Ahmedabad-Dholera Corridor

The proposed ₹124.40 crore SPRR interchange is another infrastructure addition supporting the growing Ahmedabad-Dholera connectivity network.

With the expressway already providing faster access between Ahmedabad and Dholera, improvements at its junction with the Sardar Patel Ring Road could further strengthen the corridor’s role in supporting regional connectivity, industrial development and future economic activity.

As the project moves through the tendering and construction stages, the new interchange is expected to become an important component of the broader transportation infrastructure connecting Ahmedabad with the Dholera region.
